Why Every Kitchen Should Have Fruit Cobbler Mix

By James Olson

A lot of people think of dessert as the thing that brings balance to a meal at the end of the day. However, some cooks want to spend as little time as possible in the kitchen if they make the meals more than once a week. What they may not realize that fruit cobbler mix does not have to be reserved for deep dish pies.

Many people think of cobbler or pie as an indulgent treat but this does not have to be. While served warm with vanilla ice cream, hot caramel sauce, or a sweet buttery crumb topping, at most restaurants, home versions allow more portion control. There are even ways to make the basic ingredients less fattening since that main ingredient is fruit, which is good for the body.

Most recipes call for filling that is made up of chopped or sliced fruit, white sugar, spices, and cornstarch for a thicker consistency. Some home cooks may buy this premade pie filling, which is quick but may not be best for anyone trying to lose weight. A lighter filling can be made with fruit juice concentrate and unsweetened applesauce for a denser texture. If the latter does not sound appealing, just add more fresh fruit.

This crumble is something that is being used often in other desserts, like cake and cinnamon crumb muffins. Easy donuts can be made by cutting raw premade biscuits and cooking in deep fryer until brown. Once drained, cover with glaze, followed by crumb mixture. Cobbler mixture can also add a little spice to savory side dishes like apple stuffing or honey cornbread.

Some parents like to use the crumbles to breakfast, as this is a popular mix in for oatmeal. Kids tend to like the sweetness and parents know this is a better choice than some cold cereals that are loaded with sugar. Also, rolled oats may be added to mix before baking.

The great thing about having cobbler mix is that adding other ingredients, like dried fruit, grains, and nuts, adds to its versatility. The mixture can also be healthier by not adding butter or stick margarine. There are a few oils, like canola, that have a high smoke point and very little saturated fat. Also, most of these oils have a mildly sweet flavor or no taste that can take away from the recipe.

This mix can also be baked and used as a flavorful crumble used to top oatmeal, ice cream, or yogurt. One low calorie dessert that is ideal for warm weather is the fruit and yogurt parfait. By layering the crumble with fruit and yogurt in a bowl or glass, a treat can be made in minutes. It can also be added to pan fried apples or bananas.

Making this dish is fairly easy, as it requires no more than a couple of dishes for mixing and baking. If there is too much cobbler left over after a while, it can be baked by itself and used as a dessert topping. Some suggested uses include a fruit or yogurt parfait, ice cream, or when mixed with roasted nuts, a satisfying snack.
