Choose Candied Bacon For Your Next Party

By Lisa Ellis

There are many delectable treats that anyone can enjoy during leisure time or maybe as a way to celebrate a special occasion. Some of the new indulgences are savory, sweet, or tangy and the portability makes eating these even more fun. One of the items that are growing in popularity is candied bacon, which embodies every kind of taste.

Though it may sound bizarre, the truth is that many of us had this in one form or another. Most common is with pancakes or waffles, when the syrup would run over into the bacon or sausage. Since most sausage links or patties have to be cooked, they are not as easy to carry around as bacon strips.

Compared to most meat and poultry, pork lends itself best to a spiced sugary companion. This is why some have come to like teriyaki style pork or ham coated with honey and pineapple slices. The difference here is that these candied treats have no sauce so they are portable as well as tasty.

Anyone who wants to try this at home can try any recipe that calls for a few thick cut slices with a smoke flavor like hickory or applewood. The glaze can be made using a liquid like honey or maple syrup, with a half teaspoon of coarse salt and cinnamon for every dozen slices. Some like to use sugar instead of a liquid for more of a crunchy flavor.

It is best to go easy on the ingredients because too much of one thing can kill the flavor combination. Once each strip is evenly coated, just place under medium heat until the ingredients caramelize. Afterwards, place bacon on a sheet to drain oil and let cool before eating.

This snack is great for casual work meetings or even a cozy gathering at home. For those who like to cook on the grill, a slice or two can accompany any barbecued meal. These can keep for a few days when stored in a tightly sealed container with cool temperatures.

The great thing about this treat is that pork contains a lot of protein and most recipes call for lean bacon strips. Anyone making this at home will find that the prep time is minimal and can be ready to eat in a matter of minutes using a standard or small oven. There are also substitutions that can be made just as quickly.

Turkey and meatless alternatives can be used, as some types have the same crispy texture as regular bacon. For the glaze, honey or agave nectar syrup makes a nice substitute and is less likely to cause sugar spikes. Spicy food fans like to add a bit of ground cayenne or chipotle pepper for a little excitement.

This treat can add something extra to a potluck or food spread, especially if the host wants to diversify the dishes. In some social settings, it is common to have a healthy option like Greek yogurt dips or vegetarian flatbreads. A nice companion to bacon are sweet potato fried with a honey dip.
