Powdered Sugar Icing


Powdered sugar icing is used to decorate cakes, pastries, cookies, desserts etc. Icing sugar or confectioner's sugar are other terms for powdered sugar. Sugar granules can be replaced with sugar in powder form to dissolve quickly in edible mixtures. This icing contains sugar in powdered form which is also mixed along with wheat flour, cornstarch and calcium phosphate to make the powder more smooth flowing.

Basic Icing Recipe

You Will Need
  • 2 cups of icing sugar
  • 1 egg
  • tablespoon of vanilla essence (you can add more or less, according to your taste)
  • 5 to 6 drops of almond extract
  • 1 tablespoon of softened butter
  • pinch of salt
  • milk
Method

Empty the icing sugar in a bowl and add an egg to it. Mix well, till they are a fine paste. Add vanilla essence, almond extract and softened butter and salt, and stir to mix all the ingredients together. Add milk, in such proportion, that the mixture is a thick paste.

With this icing you can decorate your fresh hotcakes and cookies. You can also dust some powdered sugar over them.

Lemon Icing
You can use this icing to decorate your lemon tarts. If you want this icing to represent the color of lemon, just add two or three drops of yellow food color.

You Will Need
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 8 tablespoons or cup of softened butter
  • lemon juice
Method

Toss the softened butter into a bowl, and blend it well, using an electric mixer. Add powdered sugar to the butter and again blend with the electric mixer. Now, add lemon juice to this mixture. Lemon juice can be added, according to your taste. You can always add more sugar to make the icing more thick.

Ginger Icing
This is a very tasty treat and an easy homemade icing recipe. Use this icing on ginger cookies.

You Will Need
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 8 tablespoons or cup of softened butter
  • 1 tablespoon of ginger juice, from a freshly grated ginger
Method

Take a bowl and pour the softened butter into it. Blend it well using an electric mixer. Then add powdered sugar to the butter and blend again. Now, add the ginger juice to this mixture. Ginger is a spicy root, so after adding the juice, taste it. If you want it more spicy, add some more, according to your taste. Keep in mind that the cookies too have ginger in it. Mix more sugar to make the icing more thick, if required. Spread it on your cookies and serve.

Coffee, Mint and Vanilla Icing
This icing will taste best on cream crackers, with its tangy coffee and mint flavor, can be served after dinner.

You Will Need
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 8 tablespoons or cup of softened butter
  • 1 tablespoon of mint essence
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla essence
  • 1 tablespoon coffee
  • mint leaves (optional)
Method

Pour the softened butter in bowl and blend it well using an electric mixer. Add the powdered sugar to the butter and blend again. Add mint essence and then vanilla essence to the blended mixture. Keep this mixture covered tightly for 20 to 30 minutes, so that the essence merges with the butter. After this, add coffee to it and blend the mixture once again. Take some cream cracker biscuits and deck the top with this icing. Serve, with a mint-leaf garnish on top.

You can further use sugar flowers to decorate your hotcakes or cookies and make it look more attractive. You can also add food colors to your icing mixtures.
