How to Make Spaghetti Sauce

Spaghetti is one of the most popular types of Italian pastas which is thin, long and cylindrical. Spaghetti which was introduced in Italy soon gained popularity all over the world. It is made by mixing water with flour or semolina. Cooking spaghetti is quite an easy method. All one has to do is to heat water in a large pot and when it starts boiling, add 1 - 2 teaspoons of salt, followed by uncooked spaghetti. This should be cooked for at least 10 - 15 minutes or till the spaghetti reaches the desired thickness. The cooked spaghetti is usually consumed by adding cheese, oil, meat and different types of sauces. However, the most commonly used sauce in spaghetti is the tomato sauce and it is also one that is loved by people. Spaghetti Tomato Sauce

Ingredients
  • 20 ounces canned diced tomatoes
  • 15 ounces canned tomato sauce
  • 1 lb hamburger
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Spaghetti noodles
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • Dried basil - to taste
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • Dried oregano - to taste
  • Parmesan cheese
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Cracked pepper - to taste
Preparation

In a medium-sized stockpot, heat butter and olive oil in medium to low flame. When the butter melts completely, add the chopped onion, garlic and hamburger to it. Stir these ingredients till the hamburger is thoroughly cooked. Once this is done, put flour into the pan and stir. This should be followed by oregano and dried basil and stir again. Once this is fully combined, add cracked pepper, diced tomatoes and tomato sauce into the pan. Cook on a medium heat and when it starts boiling rapidly, reduce the heat and allow it to simmer on a low heat for 1 hour 15 minutes. However, one must remember to stir the mixture after every fifteen minutes to ensure that the sauce does not stick to the bottom of the pan.

While the tomato sauce is being cooked in another pan, cook the spaghetti noodles according to the directions given in the packet. Once the sauce gets completely cooked, transfer into the bowl containing the cooked spaghetti noodles and serve by garnishing it with Parmesan cheese. Spaghetti Tomato Basil Sauce

Ingredients
  • 72 ounces tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil, minced
  • 2 lb ground pork or sausage
  • 2 large red onions
  • 3 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 bell peppers, seeded and chopped
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 lb mushrooms
  • teaspoon thyme
  • 1 cups sweet wine
  • 1 small hot pepper
  • teaspoon marjoram
  • 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, grated
  • cup carrots, grated
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 12 garlic cloves, minced
  • Salt and pepper - to taste
  • Fresh parsley
Preparation

Heat olive oil in a large stockpot and fry the sausage or the ground meat till it turns brown in color. When it is thoroughly cooked, add green peppers, garlic and onions into the stockpot. This should be followed by the inclusion of the herbs like oregano, basil, thyme, marjoram, bay leaves and parsley into the pot and stir continuously till the onions become transparent and the garlic turns golden brown in color. Add chopped mushrooms into the pan, followed by the carrots. However, carrots are optional here as they may make the sauce a little sweeter. After this, add Parmesan cheese, tomato sauce and the hot pepper (whole).

Cover the stockpot with a lid and allow it to simmer on a low heat for an hour. After forty minutes of cooking, add balsamic vinegar and wine to the pot and cook for twenty minutes. When this is done, mix the tomato sauce with the spaghetti and serve hot.

Spaghetti Meatballs with Tomato Sauce

Ingredients for Tomato Sauce
  • 3 teaspoons tomato puree
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 large tin of tomatoes
  • Thyme
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • pint stock or water
  • Salt and pepper - to taste
Ingredients for Meatballs
  • 18 ounces minced beef
  • 2 slices white bread soaked in milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 onion, finely choppe
  • 2 - 3 tablespoons oil for frying
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • teaspoon dried thyme
  • cup parsley, chopped
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
Preparation

To make meatballs, take little oil in a saucepan and fry the onions and garlic in it. When the garlic turns brown and onion becomes tender, take the pan off the flame and allow it to cool completely. Take the bread soaked in milk and squeeze out the excess liquid. Crush it up in a bowl and combine it with meat, thyme, parsley, cheese, egg and nutmeg. Sprinkle salt and pepper over it and mix again. Add the cooked garlic and onions into this mixture and make small 1 inch sized balls with it. Heat oil in another frying pan and fry these meatballs till they become brown in color. Once the meatballs are ready, one can start with the tomato sauce recipe. For this, again heat oil in a pan and fry the onions in it. When this is done, add the crushed garlic and fry for a few more minutes.

Put in bay leaves, puree, thyme and tomatoes to the pan and sprinkle some salt and pepper to it. Stir well and reduce the flame to low heat. Allow the sauce to cook for 35 minutes in low heat. After 35 minutes, add the stock to the mixture and stir till it is completely blended. Put the meatballs into the sauce and allow it to simmer for half an hour or so. When the sauce attains the desired consistency, combine it with cooked spaghetti and top it with Parmesan cheese before serving.
