Best Bread for French Toast


For most of us, who do not like to tease our brains, the best bread for French toast would be the one that is lightly sweet and the wonderful flavor just lingers on. This article is a compilation of recipes made with bread which are supposedly considered, the best bread.

Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Directions
  1. Mix all the ingredients in a shallow bowl and whip them up together by using a blender or an egg beater.
  2. Immerse the bread into the egg mixture. Make sure both the sides of the bread are covered.
  3. Melt one and a half tablespoon of butter in a frying pan.
  4. Add the soaked bread and cook until it is golden brown.
  5. Use a spatula to flip the side of the bread.
  6. Serve it hot after sprinkling powdered sugar or maple syrup.
Italian Bread

Ingredients
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 4 eggs
  • One day old Italian bread, 6-8 pcs (thickly sliced)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • Crushed plain cornflakes
  • Powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons honey
Directions
  1. Spread the bread as a single layer on a baking dish.
  2. Whip together eggs, honey and vanilla.
  3. Pour this mixture over the bread. The bread should be thoroughly coat, leaving the excess mixture to be absorbed.
  4. Cover the baking dish and refrigerate it overnight.
  5. The next day, heat the oven to 400 degrees.
  6. Melt butter and pre-heat the glass baking dish, in the oven.
  7. Spread the cornflakes on the plate and dip both sides of bread into the flakes.
  8. Place in the hot baking dish.
  9. Cooking time depends on the size of the bread.
  10. Check to see if the bottom of the bread has turned dark golden brown. That is an indication that the toast is cooked.
  11. Dress up the plate with fresh melon and drizzle with honey or powdered sugar.
Banana Bread

Ingredients
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 loaf banana bread
  • confectioners' sugar for dusting (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
  1. Whip together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk and vanilla with a fork, in a shallow bowl. Keep this aside.
  2. Take a large skillet and melt butter over medium heat.
  3. Cut banana bread into 4 thick slices.
  4. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture.
  5. Place it in the hot pan.
  6. Cook till both the sides of the bread are golden brown.
  7. Before serving, dust it with confectioners' sugar.
Hawaiian Bread

Ingredients
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon rum-flavored extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 can (8 ounce) crushed pineapple, with juice
  • 1 (1 pound) thickly sliced loaf Hawaiian sweet bread
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest
  • 1 cup maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 (3 ounce) can mandarin orange segments, drained
Directions
  1. Whisk together egg yolks, egg white, vanilla, rum extract, orange zest, water and 1 tablespoon honey, in a shallow bowl.
  2. Coat bread slices in egg mixture and then keep it aside.
  3. In a small saucepan, add crushed pineapple, mandarin oranges, honey and maple syrup. Slightly heat it over medium-low heat for 3 minutes.
  4. Heat a frying pan over medium high heat.
  5. Fry bread slices until golden brown on both sides and serve hot with fruit sauce.
Wheat Bread

Ingredients
  • 8 pieces whole wheat bread
  • 2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups soy milk
  • 2 eggs
Directions
  1. In a shallow baking pan, whip together milk, eggs, vanilla and cinnamon.
  2. Place pieces of bread in this mixture.
  3. Heat a fry pan over medium heat.
  4. Place the soaked bread on the pan and cook until both the sides are golden brown.
  5. Serve with maple syrup or favorite fruit jam spread.
French Toast Bread Pudding

Ingredients
  • 1 loaf of challah or brioche, crust removed, cut into large cubes
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups milk (or buttermilk is good too)
  • 3 tablespoons sugar, honey or sweetener of your choice
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions
  1. Take a large casserole and butter it. Then fill with the bread.
  2. Whip together milk, vanilla, cinnamon, salt and sugar into the eggs.
  3. Pour the custard mixture over the bread and toss it lightly.
  4. Refrigerate overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Toss the bread to give that extra "fluff".
  6. Bake until lightly golden brown. Insert a toothpick to see if it comes out dry.
  7. The cooking time is approximately 45 minutes.
  8. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or maple syrup and serve.
